I was wondering if anyone knows where to download free and/or purchase sheet music for gypsy-style violin solos... such as Romanian or other Eastern European gypsy music. Does sheet music even exist for that kind of music? I have been having trouble finding some--if people could suggest violinists or composers that would be great.
music for example..
I've been working as a solo musician with two Contact Improv dancers (who've danced together a lot),
our aim being to possibly gel some sort of structure, or dance piece form, to improvise off of.
Maybe a performance eventually,
maybe just for the joy in it.
We've done a few sessions using electric guitar, ambient moody sounds and such - went good.
This afternoon I switched to electric violin, run thru a sort of wah tubular fx filter (with some subtle reverb).
Very fine results!
All the airy, textured sounds of a fiddle (bowed or plucked) worked splendidly with Kyla and Quint's dancing
and we all got lost in the shifting interplay of sound and bodies.
The violin played the dancers and the dancers played violin, don't'cha know.
Also I'd asked about hands.. using hands in dance, like those lovely asian traditions of stylized gestures..
so the dancers at times emphasized this aspect, and I used their hands as a focus to build musical moods from..
We worked just one hour without stopping - but it felt sublime.
Wanted to share this..

The violin I have loved, and have played for over ten years, a family heirloom, was stolen out of the back of my car on the 4th of July. A good friend was kind enough to purchase me a replacement, an electric violin, but I am afraid it is just not the same.

We are a couple of violin makers who seem to be stuck with one of our instruments, a beatiful hand-crafted viola. It was built on spec, and most of the shops here in Seattle aren't interested in "yet another viola", so maybe someone here will have interest or know someone who might.
This instrument was finished in 2001, though it has gone through quite a process to become what it is now. Since we have few instruments around to do varnish experiments on, this one has been re-finished at least three times (all times by the original maker) before now, each time gaining more and more character. Now it has a warm and charming antiqued finish on it, and we're leaving it as it is. As we've truly "antiqued" it, there are "repairs" that we have done to give it a more authentic look. Peg holes have been bushed, the top has been pulled of and reglued, and one rib has been split and "repaired" (I'm using quotes because we did all the "damage" intentionaly, in reality, these "repairs" are quite common on older violins and don't affect the sound or play).
This is a highly playable instrument, and we'd love to see it get into the hands of a player! All interested parties should contact us by private message for photographs and pricing and shipping info, and for answers to any questions you may have.

Wow! Am I jazzed! These strings go for 50 bucks at Ifshins.

Haven't put them on yet. Probably will before I head out to tonight's jam session.

If any y'all want some new and free strings, the place to send away to is: info@pirastro.com.

(For some reason I thought Pirastro was an Italian string maker. So I wrote Ciao! and Grazie! in my message. But the packaging and letter accompanying the strings were from Offenbach am Main, Germany. So in my follow-up message, I'll include Ausgezeichnet! and Vielen Danken.)

Hey All, New to the tribe. . .sort of, as actually I know most of you from other tribes and 'friendships'.

Got quite a giggle out of the spat between Kam, Black, Ralph and Pablo in February.

My response to 'new player': there is no way to get around the value of having a private teacher--it's equal to having a Guru and priceless if you're really interested in doing the WORK. So Kam, don't even ask me a question unless you practice a minimum of 4 hours per day. You're out of tune because you have no listening skills or discipline to repeat that section endlessly until perfect! Yes, I'm a violin teacher. Yes, I live with my Guru. Yes, I've played professionally for 17 years and have been playing for 25, NO ONE gets around the basic fact of paying the discipline dues! If you've been 'tinkering' for 3 years--then cut the crap and put some real effort into it. I teach 3-6 grade in school and have private students that range in age from 5-75, and even my 5 year old can play 4th finger on E with perfect intonation and he's been playing for only 1 year. All of my students can play 4th finger. . . so stop milking and start eating solids--do your work, dude!

Secondly, I both agree and disagree with Black about the quality and cost of violin thing. A true master can bring the beauty of music out on any piece of rotten or even synthetic wood--quality does not make quality in terms of talent; however, I will agree that it sure feels better and one can simply go farther on a quality piece of wood. . .kind of like cheap wine and aged wine, really. So, Black crack a bottle of nicely aged vino and love your quality piece of wood, but don't get too worked up about novices they come to us for answers:)
