Re: Best band with a violin player
Sun, November 19, 2006 - 11:42 PMFor starters, Ancient Future (currently Georges Lammam-- they've had amazing violinists over the years) and Light Rain (Doug Adams). Coolangubra (Claes Pierce) (now disbanded). Soloists: Vanessa-Mae, Tracy Scott Silverman, Darol Anger. On the softer side, Secret Garden (Fionnuala Sherry).
Perpetual Groove when they have guest violinist Deanna Herman! Sonic Tribe introduced me to Phil Heaven's viola playing (does viola count?).
Then of course there is the genre of Afro Celt Sound System with guest violinists Nawazish Ali Khan and Ciaran Tourish (and likely more), and Natalie MacMaster and so many Celtic violinist in an array of bands.
Kronos quartet are surprising and fun-- they were guests on Light Rain's 'Dream Suite' cd back in the day, and continue to this day.
I'm trying to think of more rockish, intense bands, and am not coming up with anything-- lots of rock n' roll bands have recorded singular songs with violin riffs, but who had an official player? I LOVES me some electric violin.
